Welcome to My Sleep Therapy Site. I bring over 25 years of Psychotherapy experience to my practice. I help people address and treat the underlying cause of their particular sleep concerns with a form of sleep therapy known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia also known as CBT-I. I augment this treatment by integrating aspects of Acceptance Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). My approach is collaborative and solution focused.
If you are seeking help with your sleep, you’ve likely arrived at the conclusion that sleep no longer behaves like a trusted and reliable bedtime ally. It plays by it’s own rules or no rules at all. No matter what you do, sleep resists being wrestled into submission.
The Good News….. Poor sleep and insomnia is a treatable condition that responds well to the kind of treatment which I offer.
CBT-I Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia is a brief, solution focused model which is customized to meet each person’s specific sleep needs and goals.
There are several components:
Each component has it’s own distinct theory, logic, delivery and protocol.
Not everyone will need every component.
Each component is systematically integrated to produce specific sleep outcomes.
Typically between 4-8 sessions depending upon the severity and complexity of your sleep problems. We will develop a treatment plan that is targeted to your specific sleep needs and goals.
You may choose to work on a modified version of the treatment protocol if your goal is to sleep better. If you are a chronic poor sleeper and struggle nightly with insomnia, committing yourself to all aspects of the treatment process may be the best treatment option for you.
Once your sleep pattern is back on track, you may choose to schedule a few booster sessions to work on relapse prevention skills, counter arousal strategies, or mindfulness based stress reduction.
If the onset of your sleep difficulties has been recent or becomes problematic during times of stress, the skills acquired during treatment are life long. They can also prevent acute episodes from becoming enduring and chronic.
Most of my clients notice significant improvements in their sleep quality within 4-5 sessions.
Instead of tossing and turning for hours before falling asleep, expect to fall asleep within 30 minutes.
If you’ve been waking up many times a night, you may wake up a few times, but will fall back to sleep easily, or not wake up in the night at all.
If you’ve been spending a lot of time thinking and worrying in bed, you will learn skills through cognitive behavioral therapy to manage those thoughts outside of bed.
Your assessment will include information about your sleep history and several sleep-specific inventories. Will also include:
Identifying predisposing, precipitating, and perpetuating factors relevant to your sleep diagnosis.
Review medical/mental health history that may be impacting your sleep.
The assessment will also include gathering information about your lifestyle, current sleep habits, sleep schedule and daytime consequences of poor sleep. It will also be important to determine whether bed has become a cue for being awake, instead of for sleeping (conditioned arousal).
We will identify any behaviors, expectations, and ways of thinking about sleep that may be increasing bedtime arousal and activating your alert signals.
At the end of your assessment I will review my findings with you. The information gathered will help me to establish a preliminary diagnosis, initial treatment recommendations, and allow me to customize a comprehensive treatment plan that will be based on your individual sleep needs.
If your assessment triggers any red flags regarding possible sleep problems that may be attributed to an undiagnosed sleep disorder such as:
Sleep apnea
Restless leg syndrome
Other sleep related disorders
I will recommend sharing my findings with your referring provider or recommend a referral for a sleep study or other diagnostic testing.
Completing the assessment does not obligate you to proceed with treatment.
If interested, please contact me at (831) 475-6176 or fill out my contact form to discuss your Sleep Therapy in Capitola.
If you agree to move forward following your assessment, we will discuss which components of treatment protocol you want to commit to based on your expressed goals. I will encourage you to schedule 4 consecutive weekly sessions.
90 minute comprehensive diagnostic assessment and evaluation. Includes feedback and recommendations for implementing a buffer period, sleep promoting routine and sleep optimization strategies.
Payment is expected at the end of each session.
Cancellation Policy
I reserve a specific time for you. It is extremely difficult to schedule another person in that time on short notice. For this reason, I charge the full session fee for appointments cancelled with less than 24hr. notice. If you know that you cannot keep your appointment for the following week, let me know during our session and I will be happy to re-schedule a different time for you.
Financial Policies Payment Methods
I offer a direct-pay option. It permits a higher level of confidentiality since your records will not be shared with insurance companies or employee assistance programs. This provides greater flexibility and autonomy for designing your sleep focused treatment plan. Thus, the length of care, frequency of sessions, and other aspects of the work we do together is between us without constraints from your insurance company. I accept cash or check. You can also use your credit card, Health Savings Account and Flexible Savings Account. I also offer no-interest payment plans. We can discuss your particular situation at your assessment appointment.
I currently accept out of network insurance plans. If you will be using your insurance and/or choose to seek reimbursement, I can provide you with with an invoice and/or “super bill” that can be submitted for reimbursement. I do not charge for medical record review, coordination of care (i.e. speaking with your doctor or other professional involved in your care), record keeping, consultation, or other tasks instrumental to your treatment. I will keep a credit card on file in the event that you miss a scheduled appointment and do not provide 24 hour cancellation notice. Your credit card number on file will be in a secured location.
